Martindale (Md) Fabric Durability
Martindale is a measure of the durability of a fabric. An approved furniture fabric must have more than 15,000 Md. For public environments and other places with a lot of wear and tear, at least 30,000 Md is recommended. Martindale (Md) is measured by rubbing a blunt object against a fabric often enough for a thread to come off, so that a stitch appears in the fabric. The higher the Md the better.
Fabric Light Sensitivity
Fabric light intensity is measured in grey scale or blue scale. That is, how UV-resistant the fabric is and how well the colours last in the long run. The scale is from 1-8 and the minimum pass is 4 and over 6 is extremely good. We can upon request provide these facts for all our fabrics but it’s not provided on all our product pages.
Fabric Pilling Resistance
There are also methods to measure the fabric’s sensitivity to the pilling formation, this does not affect the durability of the fabric, but can affect the appearance of the fabric over time. The most common measure is Pilling which is measured in a scale between 1-5 where 5 is best. It is also called fastness to rubbing.
Fire safety and flame retardants
There is classification of furniture fabrics. It is difficult to understand for those who are not familiar and are not usually stated by all manufacturers, for example: Class B1 acc. DIN 4102 part 1. There are Teflon treatments and flame retardant fabrics and more, but this is often not optimal fire safety. The most important thing for fire safety in a sofa is actually that the fabric is thick and of good quality so that it has a longer burning time so that the fire does not reach the cladding material so quickly. More information about this can be found at the Swedish Consumer Agency, see the link below.Swedish Consumer Agency: Safety requirements for fire in loose textile furnishings and furniture
If you have questions or want to know something about fire classes on any of our fabrics, we are happy to bring that information to you.
Flame retardants
Brominated flame retardants are banned in the EU and all flame retardants used in the furniture industry in Europe are of a more environmentally friendly variety. If you are sceptical of flame retardants, you can in good conscience choose a sofa from Sofa Bed Expert as our suppliers do not treat their fabrics or the upholstery in their furniture with flame retardants.
The reason why flame retardants are used in sofa beds is mainly that the legislation in two large markets, the USA and the United Kingdom, has required this. There are also situations in Sweden where this is required, for example in public procurement.
We only sell quality furniture fabrics that meet the standard for fire protection and therefore has the ambition to sell sofa beds free of flame retardants.
Are you looking for more information about mattresses and sofa beds? On our buyers guide, we have lots of information about different mattresses, their materials and different types of sofa beds.

Leather Master Furniture Care Recommendations
We sell quality sofa beds that last a long time and to make you feel safe with your purchase we also sell the entire Leather Master range of furniture care products including textile glue and stain removers in the event of an accident.
You can find them under Furniture Care Products.
Textile Stain Removal
When it comes to stain problems on textiles, the solution varies greatly depending on what kind of material it is and what properties the material has. Many textiles, for example, are marked with dry cleaning and thus do not withstand water or water-based products. Always check the manufacturer’s care instructions.
It is also important to always test the product in a place that is not visible before starting the actual treatment!
- Most stains go away with plain water or Textile Cleaner / Microfibre Cleaner.
- Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations.
- The sooner you treat a stain, the easier it is to get rid of.
- Always perform a “spot test” before stain removal, to be sure of colour fastness, etc.
- If possible, scrape off the excess stain with a blunt object before treatment.
- If possible, work away the stain from the back of the fabric.
- Place enough absorbent uncoloured paper or textile material on the underside of the stained fabric. Move the absorbent material as the stain is transferred.
- Process the stain in circles from the outside to the centre by dabbing upside down. Do not rub as it wears on the fabric.
- “Tap” with, for example, a dish brush on the stain, it makes the stain dissolve faster.
- Avoid rings after the stain fluids by leaving a moist zone in the outer circle.
- If possible – wet the surface all the way to the next seam, to avoid water rings.
- Determine the type of stain, e.g. water-based, oil-based, solvent-based, etc. to be able to get better and faster help when needed
Microfibre
One material that is becoming increasingly popular today is microfibre. It is a synthetic material and got its name from the fact that the fibres that the fabric is made of are extremely thin. 1 mile of fibre road no more than 1 gram. Microfibre furniture often has a slightly suede-like feel, and is usually easy to clean from stains and spills.
If your sofa has become sunny or slightly dirty, refresh it as follows:
Soak a microfibre cloth under the tap in hot water. Add a few pump strokes with Textile Cleaner and turn out hard. Fold and roll the cloth around a sponge into a hard roll. Pull the roller back and forth in different directions over the sunny parts so the dirt lifts up from the fabric
The second type is impregnated and spills from liquids etc. remain on top. This type of microfibre should be re-impregnated at regular intervals so that the protection does not disappear. If you do not impregnate this type of furniture, any stains will go down into the fabric and then be very difficult to remove.
The everyday care of both types of microfibre is best done as follows:
Soak a microfibre cloth in hot water. Add a few pump strokes with Microfibre Cleaner and turn out hard. Fold and roll the cloth around a sponge into a hard roll. Pull the roller back and forth in different directions over the sunny parts so that the dirt lifts up from the fabric.
Microfibre that has been stain protection treated from the beginning is re-protected 2-4 times a year or if necessary. This is done with Textile Protection.
Microfibre is a synthetic material and got its name from the fact that the fibres that the fabric is made of are extremely thin. 1 mile of fibre road no more than 1 gram. Microfibre furniture often has a slightly suede-like feel, and is usually easy to clean from stains and spills.
There are two main types of microfibre, which must be taken care of in completely different ways. The first type is impregnated. Spills from liquids are let through and do not get stuck so easily in the fabric, and any stain residues are usually easy to clean. This type of microfibre needs no impregnation.
Leather types
Aniline
Aniline is a solid coloured leather without topcoat or topcoat. Natural marks such as manure stains and barbed wire marks remain on the leather to retain as much of the natural feel as possible. Aniline has extremely high comfort and breathes a lot, but is also sensitive to spills and stains. If you own a piece of furniture in Aniline leather, it is extra important with maintenance so that the leather always has full protection and ages beautifully.
Semi-aniline
Semi-aniline is an Aniline leather that has been surface treated with an extra protective layer to increase resistance to stains. The natural marks found on an Aniline leather are in some cases still present on a Semi-aniline. This leather generally has good comfort and good breathability.
Colour dyed leather
Coloured leather has, as the name implies, additional protection and colour on the surface. Breathability and comfort are somewhat limited by the surface treatment, but it instead provides a durable and durable leather.
Bycast
Bycast is a split leather that first applies a polyurethane surface, ie plastic. Bycast is shiny and very modern. Leather is usually stain resistant but has limited comfort and breathability.
Nubuck
Nubuck is polished Aniline leather that is completely open. It has a suede-like feel and is extremely sensitive to spills. Nubuck is not a suitable material for a frequently used piece of furniture.
Leather Master Leather Care Advice
Everyday care
Most leather has been fitted with some type of surface protection. When the furniture is used, grease is added from, for example, the hands and neck. If you do not clean and re-protect the leather regularly, the body fat will slowly dissolve the surface protection. Without surface protection, grease creeps into the leather where it accumulates with large dark grease stains as a result.
Depending on what type of leather your furniture is made of and how much you use it, it needs different amounts of care and attention. However, there are a few tips for all leather furniture.
- Do not place your furniture too close to a heat source. Make sure that there is an air gap of 20-30 cm between the furniture and the heat source.
- Protect the furniture from direct sunlight for extended periods.
- Keep dust and dirt away from furniture. Vacuum with a soft brush nozzle and clean with Soft Cleaner / Nubuck Pad regularly, of course depending on how much the furniture is used.
- Our Leather Protection Cream / Nubuck products.
Bycast Care Advice
Treat the furniture with Soft Life for Leather (included in the Soft Life kit for Bycast Leather). Treat especially the parts that come in contact with the skin, such as armrests and neck areas.
Protection / Soft Life protects the surface from spills and stains, improves durability and makes furniture easier to clean if an accident occurs.
Care instructions Aniline, Semi-aniline, opaque leather
Before using the furniture, treat with Leather Protection Cream. This is especially true of sensitive aniline leather, which has a small own protection. Treat especially the parts that come in contact with the skin, such as armrests and neck areas
Everyday care includes both cleaning and protective treatment. Vacuum the furniture regularly to remove loose dirt and dust. Clean with Soft Cleaner for Leather (included in the Maxi Protection kit) at regular intervals, approximately 6-12 times a year. The re-impregnation with Leather Protection Cream should be done approximately 2-4 times a year. Of course, how often you should treat your furniture depends on how much and in what way.
Bycast Care Advice
Treat the furniture with Soft Life for Leather (included in the Soft Life kit for Bycast Leather). Treat especially the parts that come in contact with the skin, such as armrests and neck areas.
Everyday care includes both cleaning and protective treatment. Vacuum the furniture regularly to remove loose dirt and dust. Clean with Soft Cleaner for Leather (included in the Soft Life kit for Bycast Leather) at regular intervals, approximately 6-12 times a year. See instructions for use on the labels.
Wood
Nature has created a variety of woods that are suitable for furniture. These can also be surface treated in lots of different ways. Depending on the type of wood and surface treatment your furniture is made of, you must take care of it in different ways. However, there are a few tips for all wood furniture.
- Vary the placement of any objects that may be on the furniture, to avoid nuanced differences where daylight is not available.
- Wipe up liquids immediately.
- Never place hot objects directly on the furniture surface. Use coasters
- Dust the furniture surface regularly with a slightly damp cloth and dry with a dry cloth, or use Microfiber cloth.
- Use furniture paws under the legs to protect the floor.
- In case of damage to the furniture, contact your furniture dealer for advice.
Soaped wood
Soaping wood is an old method and is often used instead of oil to avoid giving the wood the slightly yellower color tone that the oil gives. To maintain the bright and nice look of your soaped furniture, use Natural Soap Protector. It provides some protection against stains and spills while retaining the light natural color of the wood.
White soaped wood
To maintain and in some cases enhance the light tone of a whitewashed wood surface, use White Wood Protector. It provides effective protection against stains from liquids and spills. A treatment with White Wood Protector gives a long-lasting result, and does not need to be done more than a maximum of 1-2 times a year.
Oiled wood
To maintain the quality and natural appearance of the wood, we recommend that the furniture is oiled with Wax Oil. The wax oil can be used on both untreated and previously oiled surfaces. It provides a unique, effective protection against stains from bags and spills, and makes the furniture easier to clean if the accident has occurred. If you just want a “clean” oil treatment without the extra protection that Wax Oil provides use Furniture Oil.
Recommended use for both of these products is approximately 2-3 times a year or as needed.
Waxed wood
Wax is an old method of treating wood. Waxed wooden surfaces provide a certain protection against spills, but above all a beautiful depth in the surface and a natural feeling. Black Bison Antique Wax is easy to apply and gives a beautiful and durable surface. Recommended use if necessary.
Lacquered wood
Varnished wood surfaces are significantly more resistant to spills than oiled, soaped and waxed surfaces. But over time, even the lacquered surface needs to be refreshed. Furniture polish is polished in with a soft cloth, scratches in the paint are polished off in a simple and smooth way, and dirt dissolves and gets stuck in the cloth.
